Twitter was already becoming a toxic place before Elon Musk bought it in October 2022. Since then he has renamed it "X" after tinkering with schemes for gouging his customers and locking out developers from the Twitter API that contributed to the success of the platform. Musk also welcomed back and has created a haven for sociopaths spouting conspiracy theories, neo-Nazi propaganda, hate speech including antisemitism, Islamophobia, gay- and trans-bashing, incitement to violence, and misogyny.
From week to week you never know what Musk will do next — to your account or even to his own platform. Investors aren’t blind to it either. When Musk bought Twitter it was worth $46 billion. Today its valuation is less than a quarter of that. X is rapidly becoming indistinguishable from Gab, Truth Social, Parler, Rumble or the countless platforms where America's haters congregate. And it is increasingly useless as a place to share information or have any sort of constructive dialog.
The Dartmouth Democratic Town Committee supports diversity (including of opinion), human rights, and dignity for everyone. Values like ours are increasingly lost in in the flood of hate streaming continuously on X. The platform has ceased being a good fit with our intended audience — if it ever was. Accordingly, we have decided to delete our X account on February 15th, 2024.
We hope you will visit us on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Check us out also on two other platforms we are testing: Post and Mastodon.
